II. BONUS BARELY RELATED EVENT
Stefan’s yearly hijacking to invite you to listen to some music!
Thanks to Paul for letting me take a bit of space to invite you all to an event featuring art, music, and community on May 2nd. Do you love the people you meet at our event? Well here’s another chance to see many of the same folks while listening to some incredible tunes.
Featuring the musical stylings of Pantayo who are self described queer Filipinx kulintang gong punks, Housewife a youth climate activist and successful indie singer songwriter, and Quincy Mullen a multi-talented electric Jazz & R&B performer it will be truly a night of incredible music and wonderful people.
Sound cool? Grab your ticket here! All proceeds support youth climate organizers here in the city.
III. SWDT PODCAST
Autumn Leaves.
At the top of this newsletter, we introduced our guest host for the May 2024 show, Veronica Antipolo. As we keep saying, she is a SWDT alumni and old friend of the show. On episode 112, Veronica shared this incredible story about her grandmother.
The Stories We Don’t Tell Podcast has almost 150 episodes. Each episode includes a live story recorded at our event and a brief discussion about storytelling. We have also done mini-series about the art of storytelling and writing, dispensing some tips and tricks we’ve learned after working with people and their stories for 10 years.
Listen to Veronica’s story at this link and subscribe to the SWDT Podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen.
IV. THE BOOK
Catching words.
The book version of Stories We Don’t Tell includes 61 stories that were all told in front of a live audience at one of our shows. The authors have generously contributed these pieces of their lives to be included in this book. Along with each newsletter, we feature a summary of a story from the book. Our guest host for May, Veronica, has been a longtime friend of the show and told a number of stories. Long before she shared the story on the podcast above, we got a glimpse in the brilliance of Veronica’s talent with this story about her journal. You’ll want to get a copy of the book just for this story!
I had to see it on paper. Maybe the words I wrote could explain to me what I was feeling and explain to me what the truth was. I can’t tell things apart when they’re swirling around inside of me. My thoughts and feelings are caught in whirlpools in my head and in my heart. I can’t tell which whirlpool I’m in sometimes, and I can’t recognize what is swirling past me. But, I can catch them with words when I write. My journal gathers all my random thoughts and feelings like a net. And my pen attaches words to them. And the words stay in this net until I get to sort them out.
Each story in the book created a memorable moment in front of a roomful of people. Moving through this anthology is an experience where these many moments complement and reflect each other, contradict and draw parallels, have profound wisdom and absurdity. Learn more about the book and order your very own copy at this link.
